PARENTS' JOURNAL

June 2005 (Part 2)

With the surgery phase out of the way we started counting down the six weeks before Hilary would leave to Virginia for her Gamma Knife (GK) radiation surgery. The funds were not available for all four of us to go, so we made plans for just Connie to accompany Hilary. Meagan and I would stay behind and chew on our fingernails until we heard word on how everything went. We had even checked into Angel Flight, a “free” flight transportation service designed to get patients with urgent needs from point A to point B. For multiple reasons, this did not apply to Hilary’s situation and she did not qualify. We also tried to get information on McDonald House, another “free” or greatly discounted hotel / apartment for families of out-of-town patients. During the middle of all this frantic searching and “how-in-the-world-are-we-going-to-do-this?” neuroses, God gently tapped on our shoulders again and said, “Watch this!” Out of the blue, Connie gets a call from Selena, who is our friend Mary’s cousin. Mary’s whole family had been told of Hilary’s medical condition and had been praying along with everyone else we know. Selena explained that she would like to donate four round trip airline tickets and a seven night stay for four in a hotel of our choice near the University of Virginia (UVa) Medical Center so that all four of us could fly to Virginia together and be with Hilary during her GK hospitalization….Wow!… Some things just floor you every once in a while. We were dumb struck. For one, we’d only met Selena maybe twice at Guerrero family gatherings over the last several years. We didn’t know her very well, yet here she was, wanting to do all this for us. Secondly, she and her husband aren’t these super wealthy people with piles of money laying around just waiting for a good cause to donate to. They are good, decent “worker-bee” folks just like the rest of us. God is AMAZING, how He touches people’s hearts to urge them to provide for others.
