-- Hilary's Latest Medical Information --
November 2, 2006
Hilary saw her neuro-ophthalmologist yesterday. While her COLOR vision was slightly worse, her visual fields, grey scale, and acuities were better / normal. He felt safe enough to go ahead and decrease her steroid to 1/2 a pill a day! If everything stays the same or improves over the next month, the plan is to stop the steroids the first week in December! Hilary says that would be the best birthday present anyone could give her. (Her 15th birthday is 12-10-06). We'll see.
Dr. Carter also mentioned that he has made something of a research project out of Hilary and her unusual case. He has assigned his medical school students and residents the task of doing an exhaustive search of all available scientific research literature that pertains to radiation-induced optic neuritis and possible treatments other than mega-steroids and hyperbarics, which Hilary has been through ad nauseam.
To his surprise and delight, they found a promising study done on rats that seems to indicate a certain ace inhibitor (blood pressure pill) has shown to be effective in cases of radiation induced blindness. We are not starting that NOW but he says it is nice to have another potential weapon in our arsenal in case Hilary relapses again.
Thanks for all the continued prayers.
Love to all,
Morrows
