Medical Update 12-08-05
Hilary had another follow-up appointment with the neuro-ophthalmologist, Dr. Carter this morning. Her visual fields test on the right eye was “slightly worse”, but not clinically, significantly so. He explained that one could do two of these tests, one right after the other, and one would expect some slight variation. It doesn’t mean their vision changed from the 1st test to the 2nd, but rather that there are just some normal variations that one comes to expect with these tests. So, his feeling is that the vision is about the same as last week. Hilary is to continue with hyperbaric sessions Mon. thru Fri. and continue with the same high dose of Decadron, the steroid that is causing her blood sugars to run between 300-500, even with giving Insulin injections every two hours.
From there we went to see Dr. Bogaev, Hil’s neurosurgeon. He reviewed the MRI films from yesterday and was VERY pleased with the way the tumor is shrinking since the Gamma Knife (GK) radiation surgery. It was roughly golf ball sized before GK, and now, four months later, it is roughly 1.5 cm across, about the size of a big marble. Below the tumor you can see dead, necrotic, liquefied jelly-like old tumor tissue! YEAH!!! Also, in all the rush last week with the blood sugars being so high I neglected to pass along that Hilary’s growth hormone (GH) levels are less elevated than before! Another YEAH!!!
