Medical Update 12-02-05

Dr. Bogaev saw Hilary between surgery cases today, Friday, 12-02-05. He agreed she should go ahead and see Dr. Barker for the elctromyogram (EMG) to rule out carpel tunnel syndrome and to study whatever is going on with her foot / ankle numbness. Dr Bogaev went ahead and ordered another MRI for this Wednesday and wants to see her Thursday to discuss the results.

After that appointment, Connie took Hil to see Dr. Barker who talked with them for a while, then went ahead and did the EMG. This is where they inject long needles into the muscles. They then attach electrodes to the needles and run electrical currents through the muscles and measure how fast the nerves send the impulses along and how well the muscle contracts. Sounds like loads of fun, huh? His feeling was that Hilary does NOT have carpel tunnel syndrome. He thinks she is leaning her elbow on the table top too much, thereby putting too much pressure on her nerve, causing the wrist and hand to go numb. As far as her foot / ankle numbness, he feels the high doses of steroids are responsible for that, and when Hilary’s eye dr decreases and eventually stops the steroids, the numbness issues should go away.

From Dr. Baker’s office, Connie and Hilary went to Hil’s hyperbaric chamber treatment. She actually made it the whole time this session! The Diabetes Insipidus meds seem to be working! The next hyperbaric treatment is tomorrow, Saturday.
Medical Update 12-05-05

I got a call this morning from Dr. Akright who was concerned by some of Hilary’s lab values from Thursday when she saw her in the office. Apparently, her fasting blood sugar was “300 something”. She wanted to see Hilary in the office as soon as possible. I explained she was in Hyperbarics until 10 a.m. or so, but they could probably go by after that. So, I got a hold of Connie, who was trying to iron out the homebound school issues while Hilary was at her hyperbaric treatment. At Dr. Akright’s office, they retested a random blood sugar and it was >600 on one meter and 567 on another. She feels this is due to the high dose steroids, but in the mean time will have to check her sugar three times a day, and take an Insulin injection three times a day depending on what the sugar is. / \ ^ Miller
